Gabriela Bertiller

Glamourous Picnic

Bertiller’s intention was to honor and celebrate the ritual that encompasses a picnic. Using the traditional red and white picnic tablecloth pattern, she covered a group of concrete picnic tables with red and white iridescent glass tiles, creating a conceptual, colorful, and engaging setting. The visitor had the opportunity to enjoy a different outdoor experience within an artistic environment. Because Randall’s Island is surrounded by the three boroughs of the Bronx, Queens, and Manhattan, it serves as a common ground for all New Yorkers to gather and rejoice, and therefore, the idea of a beautified picnic space seemed fitting for the island.
